The Importance of Remote Work During This Time

To prevent the spread of contagious diseases, social distancing is critical. COVID-19 is easily spread through coughing, sneezing and close contact with others. The only way to minimize close contact and stop the spread of COVID-19 is through social distancing. Employers can eliminate close contact in the office by allowing their employees to work remotely.

5 Tips for Staying Productive While Working at Home

Before the pandemic, only 3.6% of the US workforce worked remotely. Now, that number has increased dramatically. Unfortunately, many employees are working remotely for the first time and experiencing the challenge of remaining productive.

To help you and your employees balance work and personal life, here are five tips for staying productive while working from home.

  1. Maintain regular working hours: You must have clear guidelines for when to work and when to stop, just like you would in the office. Although remote work is flexible, you must maintain regular hours so you’re not continuously burning the midnight oil. This will help you balance your work and your life while ensuring your team can communicate with you during regular hours.
  2. Communicate with family and other individuals around you: If you have others in your space such as your spouse or kids, make sure they understand what you can or can’t do while you work. It’s important to communicate that although you’re home, you still have a job to do. If you don’t set boundaries, you may experience productivity loss.
  3. Dedicate space in your home for work: Keeping different spaces helps you physically separate work and personal life. Plus, moving to your designated workspace puts you in the mindset to work versus sitting on your couch with your laptop.
  4. Talk to your coworkers and management often: You must remember you’re not in this alone. Remain transparent with your team to ensure projects move forward. Whether you’re discussing work via online meetings or sending an email update, there’s no such thing as over-communication when working remotely.
  5. Take breaks: Burnout is a real thing, especially when working remotely without team interaction. It’s also easier to sit at your computer for longer periods. Give yourself scheduled away-time from your desk breaks based on your company’s policy.

Although your employees need to have dedicated work time when working remotely, you must also remain respectful and understand everyone’s situation is different. Many of your employees may be faced with challenges such as the loss of childcare and other responsibilities. Do your best to stay openminded and supportive during this time.
