The history behind RFA Engineering stretches back more than two decades before the RFA name was established.
In 1943, eight tool designers left Northern Pump Company to establish Minnesota Engineering Company (MEC). Initially focused on supporting the changing tooling needs of the defense industry, MEC steadily expanded its capabilities. By the 1950s, its work included specialized production machinery, civil engineering, bridge and roadway design, and other engineering services.
During the early 1960s, the organization continued moving beyond its tooling roots and toward product development and mechanical engineering. An important figure in that transition was Robert L. “Bob” Rogers, a mechanical engineer and Bradley University graduate who joined MEC in 1962. Rogers brought extensive engineering and management experience and eventually served as General Manager and Vice President.
At the same time, Frank H. Freels had built a unique technical and leadership career of his own. After 22 years in the U.S. Army, including work as a Research and Development Officer for Wheel and Track Vehicles, Freels retired as a Lieutenant Colonel and joined off-highway equipment manufacturer LeTourneau-Westinghouse as Manager of Engineering Administration.
Two Careers Come Together
In 1967, Rogers and Freels brought their complementary backgrounds together and purchased Frontier Engineering Company, an engineering business that had been established in 1961 by former MEC engineers.
They reorganized the company as Rogers, Freels and Associates, Inc. (RFA), with Rogers serving as President and Freels as Vice President.
Together, the two founding leaders combined experience in mechanical engineering, product development, technical management, vehicle R&D, off-highway equipment, and engineering administration. Their vision was to build an engineering organization capable of working closely with clients and providing practical engineering expertise across a variety of industries. More than half a century later, the technologies and industries RFA serves have continued to evolve, but that early emphasis on engineering expertise, adaptability, collaboration, and solving real-world customer challenges remains an important part of the company’s story.
